The Spain number '9' has joined a Chelsea club who last season won the FA Cup and Premier League. Coached by Carlo Ancelotti, who took over the reigns in 2009, the Chelsea squad is packed with world class players of the calibre of England internationals John Terry and Frank Lampard, striker Didier Drogba and goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Chelsea are often referred to as the Blues or Chelsea pensioners after the well known war veterans who reside in a nearby hospital. The club is based in west London and play their games at Stamford Bridge. With Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham all in the Premier League, the Blues will play eight London derbies this season, though their closest neighbours are Fulham who are also based in west London.

Torres’ new club, which was founded in 1905, has won four top-flight league titles, six FA Cups and four League Cups. The Pensioners have also tasted success in Europe having won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup twice.

Many of Chelsea’s title triumphs have come in the last decade with three Premier League titles (2004/05, 05/06 and 09/10), three FA Cups (2006/07, 08/09 and 09/10), two League Cups (2004/05 and 06/07) and three Community Shields (2000, 2005 and 2009).

Fernando Torres has joined a club currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table on 41 points, five off second-placed Arsenal and ten behind leaders Manchester United.

The Pensioners are still alive in both the FA Cup and the Champions League. Last weekend Chelsea were held by Everton at Goodison Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The two teams will meet again at Stamford Bridge in a replay on February 16 with a home tie against Reading awaiting the winners.

Despite playing in the Europa League this season, Fernando Torres is eligible for the Champions League. Should Carlo Ancelotti see fit, the striker could appear for the Londoners against Danish outfit F.C. Kobenhavn in the last sixteen. Chelsea qualified for the knock-out stages of the tournament by the way of a top placed finish in Group F with 15 points from a possible 18.
