Spain’s number ‘1’ and fifth in the World. Fernando Torres is at the top of the beautiful game in terms of media value, according to a team of Spanish researchers from Navarra University. With a points score of 11.8, the Liverpool and Spain number ‘9’ has gained one decimal point since the results were last published in June last year. Only four players have collected more points in the study than the Red marksman, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Kaká.

With the 2010 World Cup right around the corner, Fernando Torres was also considered Spain’s highest profile player. The next Spaniard on the list is Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez who lies back in ninth with 10 points, with Cesc Fabregas further behind in 13th with 8.8 points.

The striker’s pulling power was evident at the Confederations Cup last summer which Spain qualified for after their Euro 2008 triumph. Fernando Torres was one of the players most in demand from fans during the event regularly signing autographs and posing for photographs with supporters.

The inclusion of both Torres and club captain Steven Gerrard (sixth with 11.2 points) in the top ten have helped catapult the Anfield club into the top ten teams in world football.

The Reds currently lie sixth in the charts, with a slight improvement on the last results published in June last year. The Merseysiders have gained 2.1 points to climb up to 49.1 points overall. Barcelona (96.9), Real Madrid (83), Manchester United (65.4), Chelsea (59.7) and A.C. Milan (56.2) are the five teams above the Reds.
