The international players’ union, which has 57,500 members, included the Liverpool striker in FIFPro’s team of the year line-up. Fernando Torres was chosen up front alongside Messi, and the eventual winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Liverpool number ‘9’s stunning club and international form earned the Spaniard a place in the starting eleven, and with the year nearing its end, Fernando Torres is also a strong contender for the European Golden Ball and the Golden Eleven, both prizes awarded by the French magazine France Football.

Spain was also the country with the most number of players in FIFPro’s team of the year, as five of the Spanish players who won the 2008 European Championship were named in the starting eleven: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Xavi Fernandez and Fernando Torres.
Torres was also joined in the starting eleven by Liverpool team-mate and club captain Steven Gerrard.
