The Plenary session of the Corporation of Fuenlabrada unanimously approved the concession of the ‘Medal of the City’ to Fernando Torres. The press release distributed by the town council described how the young Spaniard was awarded the Medal, in its first ever edition, in recognition of his “sporting and personal values, his career, commitment and loyalty to his city, a city he has served as an ambassador.”

The town mayor, Manuel Robles, described Fuenlabrada’s most successful and worldwide recognised person as someone: “whose qualities have converted him into a world icon and idol.”

The player’s proud father, Jose Torres, attended the event on behalf of Fernando. Jose Torres thanked the city of Fuenlabrada for the honour bestowed on his son. During the course of the plenary session, the judges looked back at the striker’s first steps in the game. A five year old Fernando Torres started playing the ‘beautiful game’ for his local team ‘Parque Granada’.

All the municipal groups from the Fuenlabrada town hall agreed that “the commitment, positive energy and work ethic shown by Fernando are all an excellent example for children and teenagers who practice sport; because those who take part in these activities not only develop their physical abilities, but also develop important values like sharing and working together to achieve a goal.”
