Fernando Torres picked-up his 75th cap for Spain in the 2-0 win over Honduras, but before this landmark figure the striker gave an interview to Spanish sports daily journal MARCA.

- Spain have not lost faith with their style of play…but some doubters have come out of the woodwork…

It happened to us after the previous World Cup in Germany. We got knocked-out early on but still played well and left a good account of ourselves. Most of the people were quite happy with our efforts. If you lose after trying to play well, and if the side always play to win, the fans are left feeling proud of their national side.

- Have you been impressed by any other side’s so far in the tournament?

We were impressed by Germany, especially during their first game. Argentina play a different style, but they looked strong too. Spain have put in worse performances before than we did against Switzerland in the opening group game, and yet we have still won those games by five goals. Spain always play good football.

- Rivals seem to know what they need to do to take something positive from their game against Spain…

Teams know how to beat us. Defending deep, keeping it tight at the back and enjoying a large slice of luck. They try to wait for their chance, and if they score, they defend with all eleven men behind the ball. It’s happened to us against Switzerland and the USA. Teams realise that they can beat us by playing that way, therefore other sides want to copy them. But those tactics are no guarantee of success.

- Despite losing, back home there is still plenty of hope and belief in the side.

The fans are right behind the squad of players, and just like us, they want us to get our World Cup campaign back on track. They are confident that we will qualify for the next round.

- A lot of sides are hoping that Spain will fall…

It’s to be expected. Many had us as favourites, and teams were looking forward to shaping up against Spain. The higher you are, the more people want to see you fall. But we are ready for the challenge.

- The players though have their feet firmly on the ground.

We are a humble side. We have never bigged ourselves up, or lacked respect for our rivals. We are optimistic, and we have a right to be so, but even so, we are a humble side. It’s the way we do things.

- Breitner, Signori and Calderon all lost their first game at the World Cup with their respective sides before going onto to play in the final. They all agreed that a good team spirit is key.

When things are going well it’s easier for everyone involved. But now we have to prove how strong we are. It’s not about who plays, we have to be united and fully behind our manager.

- And looking ahead, it’s looking more and more likely that should Spain qualify, their rivals in the second round will be either Brazil or Portugal…

There’s no point trying to plan ahead. We have the experience of what happened to us at the Confederations Cup. We played the USA, who were facing an uphill struggle to qualify from their group. It looked like we would face Italy, but instead we faced the USA, and they went on to beat us.
