The Professional Footballers Association (PFA) named Fernando Torres in their Premier League team of the 2008/09 season for the second year running. The honour of forming part of the team of the year is one of the most prestigious awards in the game as voting is carried out by the players themselves as they select their top players of the English Premier League season.

Injuries have kept Torres’ appearances for Liverpool in the league to just 21 games, but a string of fine performances and 13 goals to his name earned the Spaniard enough votes to form part of the two-man strike-force alongside Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka.

The main prize went to Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs who this season will complete an amazing 18 seasons as a professional footballer.

The Red number ‘9’ was not the only Merseyside-based player to make the starting eleven as Torres was joined in the PFA Team of the Year by Liverpool team-mate and club skipper Steven Gerarrd.
