Monday night Villa test for Reds on Merseyside

...

23-08-2009

Fernando Torres’ Liverpool will be looking for back-to-back Premier League victories when they welcome Aston Villa to Anfield on Monday, kick-off at 20:00 hours (BST). The Reds bounced back from their opening day defeat away to Tottenham to crush Stoke City in midweek for their first three points of the season. The Liverpool number ‘9’, who was forced to receive stitches on his eyebrow against Stoke, grabbed his 51st goal for his club in his team’s emphatic 4-0 win.

Monday night’s fixture will be Rafa Benitez’ team’s third game of the Premier League; one win and one defeat. For Aston Villa, the match at Anfield will be only their second league game. The Villains lost at home 2-0 to Wigan Athletic on the opening weekend of the 2009/10 Premier League campaign as strikes from Hugo Rodallega and Jason Koumas condemned Villa to defeat.

Things didn’t get much better for Martin O’Neill’s side in midweek as they lost 1-0 to Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday. The Villains will now need to overturn the defeat at Villa Park to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

Liverpool are unbeaten against Aston Villa in their last 16 meetings, winning ten and drawing the remaining six. In the corresponding fixture last year the Reds thumped Aston Villa 5-0. The side from the Midlands last beat Liverpool in September 2001, running-out 3-1 winners at Anfield.

Ahead of Monday’s clash on Merseyside, Villa central defender and former England Under-21 player Curtis Davies highlighted Fernando Torres as the Red’s main threat. “You can't have special plans for a player like Torres because he's one of the best strikers in the world. If you make a plan for him he'll do something different. He's that good a player. We play against top players every week but they don't get any bigger than Torres.”

The Reds next face Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday August 29 kick-off at 15:00 hours (BST), before the break for the international break for the World Cup qualifiers.
