Red forward finishes fourth in race for European Golden BootFollowing a magical debut season for Liverpool, the forward ended the Premier League campaign just one goal short from picking up the prized Bronze Boot.

The Liverpool number 9 could well have opted for this season’s coveted Golden Boot, but the striker only played 33 (including four appearances as substitute) of the Reds’ 38 Premiership clashes. Torres hit 24 goals in the league for the Anfield club finishing joint second in the Premier League goalscoring charts, behind the eventual Golden Boot winner Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spanish attacker was tied on goals with Adebayor (Arsenal), and in Europe with Luis Fabiano (FC Seville) and Luca Toni (Bayern Munich).

European Golden Boot

1. Cristiano Ronaldo. (Manchester United), 31 (2) – 62 points
2. Dani Guiza (Real Mallorca) 27 (2) - 54 points
3. Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), 33 (1.5) – 49.5 points
4. Fernando Torres (Liverpool), 24 (2) - 48 points

The European Golden Boot is an award won by the highest goalscorer in all of the top European divisions during the course of a season. The prestigious trophy, which was originally called “Soulier d'Or”, has been awarded since the 1967/68 season.

The award was originally offered by ‘France Football’ but since the 1996–97 season, European Sports Magazines have awarded the Golden Boot. The change also brought about a change in the points system. The current system awards 2 points per goal scored in the top five leagues according to the UEFA coefficients list. The goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 23 are multiplied by 1.5.

Although the striker just missed out on a top three finish, no-one can take anything away from Torres in what has been a record-breaking season for the Spaniard.
