Liverpool kick-off this weekend’s Premier League round of matches versus Blackburn Rovers at Anfield (12:45 hours BST). The Reds will be hoping to put their disappointing midweek Champions League defeat behind them with their 20th league victory of the current campaign against the side from Lancashire.

Both teams go into the north-west derby requiring maximum points. A triumph for Liverpool would see the Reds leap-frog Man U at the top of the table, and a win on the road for Blackburn Rovers could see them move a step closer to safety.

Fernando Torres missed December’s 3-1 win over Rovers at Ewood Park earlier in the season with a hamstring injury. Liverpool though proved too strong for Blackburn as second-half strikes from Xabi Alonso, Yossi Benayoun and Steven Gerrard proved enough to bring all three points back to Anfield.

Coach Rafa Benitez is wary of threat posed by Rovers ahead of the Premier League clash on Merseyside: “Blackburn are in a difficult position but they have won some games recently and they have improved. They, too, will have to win against us, it is as massive for them as us.”

Sam Allardyce's side have recovered well from a poor start to the campaign. An impressive 11 points from the last six games have lifted Rovers out of the relegation zone and up to 14th. Blackburn arrive for the meeting at Anfield buoyed by their recent win over fellow strugglers Tottenham last weekend.

Rovers have only won once in the Premier League at Anfield. Back on 12 September 1993, a Mike Newell goal was enough to separate the two teams. Liverpool have not lost to Rovers in their last 12 Premier League home games, winning seven and drawing five.

The last meeting between the two teams at Anfield ended in a comfortable 3-1 win for the Merseysiders. Steve Gerrad, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all got on the scoresheet for the home side, with Roque Santa Cruz grabbing Rover’s goal in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, leaders Manchester United take on relegation threatened Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and third-placed Chelsea welcome the visit of Bolton; with both games kicking-off at 15:00 hours BST.
