The Friday lunch-time draw held for the newly created Europa League at Uefa’s offices in Nyon handed Liverpool a tie against Romanian league champions Unirea Urziceni.

The Reds entered the last 32 of the Europa League courtesy of their third place finish in the group stages of the Champions League. Liverpool however were not seeded for the draw as the club were pipped on goal difference by Olympique Marseille.

Unirea, like Liverpool, qualified for the competition after claiming third spot in their Champions League group. The Romanian outfit finished behind Sevilla and Stuttgart but above Glasgow Rangers.

Coach Rafa Benitez looked ahead to the Europa League tie. “It will be a tough game because they were in the Champions League. We will be playing a side from another league and another level but winning their title means they are a good team. They went very close in the Champions League so we know it will be tough.”

The Spaniard went to confirm that the newly created event has become one of Liverpool’s objectives for the season. “For us every competition and every game is important and the Europa League gives us an opportunity to win a trophy. We will look to progress as far as we can.”

The Merseysiders will play the first-leg of the knock-out tie at Anfield on 18 February before travelling to Romania to face Urziceni a week later.

The draw was also held for the last 16 of the competition. Should Liverpool qualify for the next round, they will face the winner of the tie between Lille and Fenerbahce (games to be played on 11 and 18 March).
