The Anfield number ‘9’ was left out of the Spain squad as Vicente del Bosque named 23 players for the upcoming friendlies against Argentina and Austria. The Spain manager later confirmed in a press conference that he had consulted both the Liverpool striker and his manager before making the decision.

“We spoke with Fernando and Rafa Benitez and we came to the conclusion it’s better not to force him. He looked a bit uncomfortable during Spain’s previous qualifiers against Armenia and Bosnia and he’s working extremely hard to regain full fitness. Hopefully he’ll make a full recovery over the next few days. I’m sure that he would have liked to have joined-up with the squad.”

Fernando Torres, who was rested for his club’s 2-2 draw against Birmingham on Monday, is recovering from a niggling groin injury.

Due to the break for internationals, Liverpool do not play again until November 21 when they face Manchester City at Anfield.
