Three points a must as Reds look to make up lost ground

Liverpool make the short trip to Bolton on Saturday, kick-off at 15:00 hours (BST), as the Merseysiders look to bounce back from Monday’s surprise home defeat to Aston Villa. A goal from Torres against the Villains, his second of the campaign, handed the Reds a life-line, but Liverpool’s joy was short-lived as the Midlanders restored their two goal advantage from the spot just two minutes later.

The Reds have suffered two losses in their opening three matches, the same number of league games they lost during the whole of last season.

Bolton Wanderers have also had a slow start to the new campaign, failing to collect any points from their opening two matches against Sunderland and Hull. The Trotters have also yet to score this season, losing both games 1-0.

Liverpool have lost to Bolton Wanderers just once in their last nine meetings. Last season the Reds picked-up maximum points against their opponents on Saturday, beating Gary Megson’s side both home and away; 3-0 at Anfield and 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium.

The two teams have met 112 times with Liverpool picking up 48 wins to Bolton’s 35; with a further 29 games ending in a draw. Bolton though edge the Merseysiders on home soil with 25 wins to Liverpool’s 18; the remaining 13 matches ending all-square.

The match away to Wanderers is a must win game for Rafa Benitez’ team as Liverpool currently find themselves six points adrift of joint-leaders Tottenham and Chelsea.

Following the Red’s Saturday’s Premier League match away to Bolton, Fernando Torres will join the Spain squad ahead of his country’s World Cup qualifier double header against Belgium and Estonia.
