The Liverpool number ‘9’ received a call-up from national team boss Vicente Del Bosque for Spain’s double-header against Belgium on September 5 in La Coruña, and four days later against Estonia in Merida. Spain lead their group World Cup qualifier group by six points ahead of second-placed Bosnia. Third-placed Turkey are a full 10 points adrift of the Group 5 leaders. With just four games remaining, the European champions could mathematically seal their place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa over the next two games.

Fernando Torres equalled both Alfredo Di Stefano and Julio Salinas in the Spain all-time scorer’s table with his 23rd goal for his country in Spain’s victory over Macedonia. The European champions came back from two goals down to win 3-2 in their last friendly fixture. Torres started Spain’s fight-back with a headed goal on 51 minutes, before strikes from and Pique and Riera sealed the visitor’s win.

The Liverpool striker will join his fellow Spain team-mates after the Red’s Premier League clash against Bolton Wanderers.
