Just days after the Spaniard was confirmed as a candidate for the Ballon d’Or, the Liverpool striker was shortlisted for the 2009 Fifa World Player of the Year award. Last year Fernando Torres collected 203 points to finish in third place behind Messi, who finished second with 678 points, and the Fifa World Player of the Year winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who achieved 935 points.

Torres is one of 23 players in the running to win the prestigious accolade. Liverpool’s top scorer this season is joined by club captain Steve Gerrard, and five fellow Spaniards: Iker Casillas, Andrés Iniesta, Carles Puyol, David Villa and Xavi Hernández.

The winner will be revealed at the Fifa World Player Gala to be held at the Kongresshaus in Zurich on Monday 21 December.
