When the draw for the Champions League was made, Ian Pinto booked his flight to the Spanish capital. A big fan of Fernando Torres, Ian was hoping to see his idol play for the first time at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. The trip however was no ordinary journey, as the football fan travelled an amazing 17, 296 kilometres from Melbourne in Australia, to Madrid. An unfortunate injury to the striker when Spain played Belgium in a World Cup qualifier, left Ian without the chance to see Torres play live, but for Aussie football fan, the experience was still one he would cherish.

Spanish daily sports newspaper Marca caught up with Ian Pinto after the game. “I have been a Liverpool fans since I was a kid, and Torres is my idol. And that’s why I decided to come over to the Vicente Calderon Stadium. I had never seen my side play live before, so I wanted the experience to be really special. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see Fernando play due to injury. But at least I enjoyed watching players like Gerrard, Reina and Xabi Alonso.”

Ian Pinto’s tale is just one of many of the special bond between Liverpool and their supporters.
