A single Torres goal not enough to avoid defeat

02-03-2005
A single Torres goal not enough to avoid defeat Fernando Torres continued his goalscoring run. In the last three League fixtures the red and white number nine has racked up five goals. In Barcelona and against Villareal he got a pair of braces, and against Racing he scored a penalty given for a ‘foul’ on him by Pablo Casar in the opening minutes of the tie. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to avoid a defeat which leaves Atletico out of the UEFA places. Torres’ goal occupied the scoreboard alone until the 40th minute when Reguiero beat Leo Franco with a low shot. In the second half Salva thundered a shot against the crossbar, but it was Aganzo who broke the deadlock in favour of Racing in the 51st minute. Atletico went for the equaliser until the final whistle, but poor passing prevented them from achieving their objectives.
With this goal Fernando Torres now has 13 in the league campaign, which makes him the number one Spanish goalscorer in the competition.
