Anfield awaits Reds first Premier League victory

18-08-2009

The Merseysiders will be aiming to bounce back form their opening day defeat away to Tottenham when Stoke City visit Anfield on Wednesday, kick-off at 20:00 hours (BST).

This season’s kick-off saw Liverpool lose to Spurs by the same margin as the previous year (2-1). Steve Gerrard equalised for Rafa Benitez’ team from the spot after Assou-Ekotto had given the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time. But just four minutes after Gerrard’s leveller, Spurs moved back in front when Bassong headed past Reina.

Stoke City beat recently promoted Burnley in their opening Premier League match. Both goals came from set-pieces as Tony Pulis’ team got their 2009/10 season off to a good start. Shawcross hit the Potter’s first on 19 minutes and Jordan put through his own net on 33 minutes to assure that the three points stayed at the Britannia Stadium.

Liverpool and Stoke had never met in the Premier League until last season. It was a frustrating couple of games for the Reds against the recently promoted side, as the Merseysiders had to settle for just two points from the two meetings.

The sides first locked horns at Anfield. An inspired Sorensen in the Potters’ goal denied the Merseysiders all three points with a series of fine saves, including two great blocks from Fernando Torres. Liverpool did have the ball in the back of the net in the first-half, but Steven Gerrard’s free-kick was wrongly ruled out for offside.

The Premier League meeting at the Britannia Stadium also ended goalless. The Red number ‘9’ came on mid-way through the second-half but was unable to find a winner for the visitors.

The two teams have faced one-another a total of 108 times, with the Red’s winning 53 matches, to Stoke’s 26; with a further 29 games ending all-square. The Merseysiders hold an impressive record at Anfield, having lost on just three occasions. The other 51 meetings have ended in 41 wins for Liverpool, with 10 games ending in stalemate.

Following the clash at home to Stoke, Liverpool next face Aston Villa at Anfield on Monday August 24 at 20:00 hours (BST).
