Atlético suffer against Espanyol their first league defeat at Metropolitano Stadium (0-2)

06-05-2018

Two goals on the second half by Espanyol decided the League game at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday evening as it was the first La Liga defeat ever for locals in the new stadium. An own goal by Savic from a deflected shot by Melendo and a right-footed strike on 77’ by Leo Baptistao gave visitors the all three points at stake on 36th matchday of Spanish top-flight competition.

Fernando Torres was on Simeone’s starting line-up and played the full 90 minutes. The number 9 was the skipper on the second half after midfielder Koke was subbed on the break.

Locals tried to control the match, but Espanyol were disciplined in the back and defended well. Vitolo had lots of initiative and created good chances for our side, but had to be subbed off in the 26th minute after feeling some muscular discomfort in his right thigh. He was replaced by Arona Sané, who made his debut for the first team.

Melendo and Leo Baptistao scored for Espanyol in the second half to give the Catalan side the win. Our next match will be on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Getafe.
