11-02-2007
Atletico beats Athletic in the league game at Calderon (1-0)Atletico of Madrid achieved the victory at the league match against Athletic of Bilbao celebrated at Vicente Calderon Stadium (1-0). The red and white team suffered in order to impose themselves to the Vasco team with a goal by ‘Kun’ Agüero. The goal, scored at the second half, made justice to the merits of the red and white team that controlled the game and played to win from minute one of the match. The triumph obtained places the red and white team at the fifth place of the classification with 39 points, the same that has Valencia as the fourth classified.

Javier Aguirre’s players played to win against a rival that didn’t take long to show their plans, giving the ball to the rival and basing their game on defence, waiting to score in a fast break. The red and white team assumed their role and touching the ball at midfield came the first approaches to Aranzubia’s area, almost always carried out by the captain Fernando Torres and his teammates Agüero and Mista.

The first great occasion of the local team came at 24’, when Torres finished a great personal play by the right wing with a centre at the heart of the area that Agüero sent outside but very close. The story was repeated a little bit after but the other way around, the Argentinian sent a pass to the gap, after achieving the bottom line that Torres shot to the lateral of the net with no angle. Athletic also had options to inaugurate the scoreboard during the first half in actions by Gabilondo and Aduriz, but none of them achieved to score. In order to finish the first half, Fernando Torres finished a plaiting play in the area with a right footed that left away.

The second half continued with the local hegemony, but lacking depth and good shots. Once again Fernando open fire at 51’ when after a run by the left wing he dodged two defenders and sent away a shot that was looking for the top right-hand corner of the net. The captain is in a good shape and the Vascos’ defenders had problems stopping him, although they aborted him in several danger occasions making offside plays.

Minutes were passing and the red and white’s dominance wasn’t translated in goals, and even Athletic could put themselves ahead at the scoreboard in a foul kick by Yeste that left close to the post. Finally at 63’ ‘Kun’ Agüero was in charge to make justice at the field surprising Aranzubia with a shot from the right corner of the area. With advantage in the scoreboard they didn’t renounce to wide differences, although they had defensive caution not to waste the obtained advantage.

The Atleticos got closer to the area taking advantage of the urgencies of the rival for being under at the scoreboard. A play between Torres, Agüero and Galletti in the area could also become the second goal if the goalkeeper wouldn’t have brought himself forward by few milimetres to Torres arrival. Maniche and Mista also tried it with both shots from the front of the area that didn’t found the goal. Fernando Torres was the last one to harass the rival’s area once fulfilled the set time with a shot that ended at Aranzubia’s hands. That was the last chance before the referee decreed the end of the match and certified an important red and white triumph that approaches them to ‘Champions zone’.
