Atletico beats Getafe and returns to the Champions zone (1-0)

17-12-2006
Atletico beats Getafe and returns to the Champions zone (1-0)Atletico of Madrid reaffirmed at Vicente Calderon his options to enter in Europe winning the Madrilenian derbi against Getafe by the minimum, adding three gold points that let the red and white team return to the ‘Champions’ zone of the classification. A lonely goal by Maniche, as the last part of a great move made by Fernando Torres, was enough to break the bad run that the red and white team was suffering at home and to beat a direct rival in the fight for the best places of the table. The red and white captain, omnipresent as forward and at the sides, confirmed the ascendant trajectory that has showed in the last matches with a great performance against the blue team and proved to be going through an excellent good shape moment showing his main characteristics: power and speed.

Both teams demonstrated from the first minute opposed analysis, a conservative Getafe waiting for something positive from a punctual play and an Atletico that insisted to put an end to the bad run of negative results at home with a great striker quartet: Fernando Torres and Agüero with the support of Galletti and Jurado. The approaching worked from the beginning and soon the locals gained positions on the field to his rival controlling the midfield, overcoming by the sides and showing danger to Abbondanzieri’s area. Although, Getafe warned first with a shot by Manu del Moral from outside the area that Leo Franco stopped.

Antonio Lopez answered it trying to surprise from far away, but little after came the action of the first and unique goal of the match. Fernando Torres, who was driving crazy the rival defence, received the ball at the right side and after dribbling Alexis beating him by speed, sent a pass from the bottom line to the heart of the area where Maniche connected an unstoppable header entering from behind. The Portuguese scored and for the first time this season Atletico inaugurated the scoreboard at his stadium.

The red and white team wasn’t comfortable just winning by the minimum and the options to increase the differences came in chances by Agüero and Maniche: the Argentinean culminated a personal move with a right footed that the goalkeeper blocked, while the Portuguese brought his powerful kick from the front of the area that left very close to the crossbar. The first half was getting to its end and the locals were leaving to the locker room with advantage, while their rival had problems to play the ball and to get close with danger to Leo Franco’s area.

In the second half Fernando Torres drove crazy the rival’s defence again entering the small area driving the ball from the left corner of the area and leaving behind two defences, although ‘Pato’ Abbondanzieri proved his reflexes when he deflected the shot of the ‘9’. Leo Franco did well also when he deflected a foul kick that Redondo executed with mastery. Agüero could’ve scored the second one on a face to face with the Argetinian goalkeeper, although he saved and prevented the goal again deflecting the shot of his compatriot.

The moment for the carousel of changes came, Aguirre entered Mista and Pernia substituting Agüero and Galletti. The view of the match didn’t change much with the changes. The aspirations of Jurado and Torres at the rival’s area where fewer as time was passing, looking for the finishing through the sides, although the main goal of the red and white team was to keep the result with a serious defence work against a Getafe that put all their heart trying to tie the match, but the scoreboard seemed to be definitive. Not much the change of Jurado by Gabi added to the game.

The match was getting to its end and the red and white victory was getting closer, the atleticos had to fight hard to hold Getafe’s offense looking for a goal that never came. Finally Atletico of Madrid ended a worked triumph that place them, already finished the fifteenth round of the National Championship League at the fourth place of the classification, at Champions League places.
