24-09-2006
Atletico of Madrid beat the leader at Vicente Calderon Stadium (2-1)Atletico of Madrid signed its first victory of the season at Vicente Calderon Stadium, and they didn’t it beating the leader, Sevilla, 2-1. Two goals by Maxi, the second one after a great move by Fernando Torres, were useful for the red and white team to achieve the triumph against the team from Sevilla, which ended the match with nine players.

Javier Aguirre’s player jumped to the field with the aim of confirming in front of their fans the good performance made last day thrashing Athletic of Bilbao at San Mames Stadium. The rival wasn’t the most appropriate: a grown up Sevilla after a spectacular beginning of the season. The first minutes of the game were useful for both teams to get ready. Atletico was trying to take control of the match at the middle field, although Sevilla’s defence kept Luccin and Costinha in the middle of the field and hardly leave options to the locals to get close to the area.

Fernando Torres signed the first action of danger for the red and white team. The captain took advantage of a good pass by Petrov to look for a goal with a header without the goalkeeper, although Poulsen from Sevilla was keeping an eye and took out the ball on the goal line. Hardly ten minutes after was Maxi who rose the supporters with a shot to the cross bar. Kanoute responded to the attacks of the red and white team with a header that Leo Franco blocked. Five minutes for the end of the first half Sevilla opened the scoreboard thanks to a goal by Renato, who, after a reject in the area he beat the Argentinian goalkeeper of Atletico.

At the second half, the match totally changes due to the sending off of Escudé, who saw the second yellow card on a hard foul to Agüero. The Argentinian could tie a little bit later with a shot which die at Palop’s hands. Maniche, that occupied Costinha’s place in the field after the break, also tried a header without fortune.

The red cards chapter didn’t get to the end yet at Calderón. In this occasion was Javi Navarro who followed the way opened by Escude minutes before, also with a double yellow card. With the numerical superiority the goal was going to come soon, and Sevilla verified it, after suffering a brutal nuisance by Atletico, watching how six minutes for the end of the match Maxi beat Palop with a strong shot from the front of the area.

Far away to be satisfied with the tie and with an intimidated rival, Javier Aguirre players kept making pressure to Sevilla until 42’, Fernando Torres left with speed Aitor Ocio and pass a gold ball from the left side to Maxi who pushed it to the bottom of the net, signing his particular double. The Calderon Stadium broke out into applause a triumph that nobody saw it at Manzanares coliseum since last April. The victory against the leader was useful for Atletico to get to the fifth place in the table with nine points.
