European football takes place at the Bridge tonight for the first time in 2014 and Jose Mourinho expects tonight's tie to be very close and the outcome to remain unclear until the end. The away goal which gave us the lead on the first leg, scored by Fernando Torres, could yet prove pivotal in shaping the outcome of the tie.

With only a draw in Istanbul Chelsea's progress is far from certain, but the Blues are best placed to be England's representatives in Friday's 11am quarter-finals draw alongside Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, who have already qualified.

That would not be an unusual situation for the Stamford Bridge club, who won back-to-back UEFA titles in 2012 and 2013 and bolstered the national coefficient for England that helps rank clubs in the Champions and Europa League.

One thing is certain: Didier Drogba will receive a tumultuous welcome back at Stamford Bridge, his first game there since that famous night of 19 May 2012 in Munich.

We know how to treat our heroes. Drogba represents so much in Chelsea's history and to the fans, but so too does progress in the Champions League, and that must be the overwhelming focus from first whistle to last.

Mourinho himself is attempting to become the first manager to win the European Cup with three different teams, having won with Porto in 2004 and Internazionale in 2010.

Galatasaray's last visit to these shores was in pre-season when two late Drogba goals (of course) defeated Arsenal 2-1 on their way to winning the Emirates Cup.

Last weekend their fans were upset when Roberto Mancini removed the Ivorian from the fray two minutes from time with the score 0-0. The striker made way for goal-shy midfielder Ceyhun Gülselam.

The result kept the yellow-reds second in the Süper Lig but Fenerbahçe's win on Sunday evening sent them five points clear at the top with a game in hand.

Two English clubs are already out of the Champions League this season, with Manchester United needing to better Olympiacos's home 2-0 victory - a result they have not managed in this competition at Old Trafford since 2011.

While the fourth Champions League place is not under great threat, rival English sides have the Blues to thank for maintaining an advantage over Germany with successive European triumphs, according to data from Bert Kassies of the European Cup Football website.

Chelsea outperformed the average English club in 2011 to 2013 and in doing so added 1.844 and 1.510 extra points to the English coefficient (3.354 in total). England would be just below Germany without the Blues' extra points contribution.

We could stand to benefit in other ways because of the English drop-outs. Financial rewards are split proportionally among clubs from the same national association according to the number of matches played; the more games Chelsea play in this competition, the greater the share of media cash coming to Stamford Bridge.

In 2012, as winners, the Blues received €15 - 23 million more than Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal, none of whom made it past the Round of 16.

Tonight is Chelsea's 100th home European match. Our record to date is played 99, won 70, drawn 23, lost 6; goals for 215, against 62.

If the score after 90 minutes is 1-1 then extra time will be played and if necessary penalties. The away goals rule applies, so any other scoreline will result in the game ending after normal time.
