The quest for silverware opens a third front tonight as domestic cup-tie football returns to Stamford Bridge. It remains an all-top-flight encounter but with team changes guaranteed. Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton study this SW6 derby.

Chelsea fans have rarely felt so optimistic following a defeat as on Sunday at Old Trafford. The higher level of creativity and performance against Manchester United - especially compared to last season - and misfortune were there for all to see.

If that gave some indication of the manager's priorities, his briefing yesterday made it clear that he will use the League Cup as a competition in which to hand younger players some experience, beginning against our Barclays Premier League neighbours. At Chelsea there will be excitement at the opportunity to see starts for promising youngsters such as Josh McEachran, Ryan Bertrand, Romelu Lukaku, Oriol Romeu, as well action for a fit-again Didier Drogba.

When Chelsea last reached the final (where we lost to Tottenham, who finished 11th) in February 2008, we went on to finish as runners-up in the Premier League and Champions League as well. Yet when the Blues won the league and FA Cup double in 2010 we competed strongly in this competition with a squad side up until a rainy night in December at Blackburn.

Having started on 30 June in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League, just five-and-a-half weeks after the final knockings of the previous season, Fulham will play their 15th game of the season tonight. This is Chelsea's seventh.

If the scores are level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes extra time will be played. If there is still no winner the tie will be decided on penalties.

Chelsea have scored 11 goals against Fulham at the Bridge since the 2004/05 season and Andre Villas-Boas' men will be raring to put a weekend defeat behind them and come back in style.

Last season Michael Essien put the Blues ahead after 30 minutes while the previous campaign saw Didier Drogba net the opener before a Chris Smalling own-goal helped us to a 2-1 win.

The year before that, in 2008/09, all three of our attacking trio found the net, with Nicolas Anelka putting the Blues ahead in the first minute before Florent Malouda and Drogba both scored in the 3-1 win.
