Liverpool start their 2009/10 Champions League campiagn on Wednesday at home to Hungarian side Debreceni VSC, kick-off at 19:45 hours (BST). The clash will be Fernando Torres’ 21st game in the tournament (the Spaniard has started 19 matches, plus an appearance from the bench). In the striker’s first year on Merseyside his club fell at the semi-final stages, losing out to Chelsea 4-3 on aggregate after extra-time at Stamford Bridge. Last season saw the Reds get knocked-out once again by the Londoners, this time in the last eight 7-5 on aggregate.

The Group E meeting at Anfield against the five-times European champions will be the Hungarian’s debut in the UEFA Champions League proper. The three previous seasons had seen the Hungarian champions go out at the second round qualifying stages of the Champions League.

This season however saw Debrecen go one step further. Loki beat PFC Levski Sofia 4–1 on aggregate to become the first Hungarian team in 14 years to qualify for the group stages of Europe’s top club competition.

The Merseysiders’ rivals were founded in 1902, but failed to reach the top light until 1993. Their first major domesic triumph arrived in 1999 when they won the Hungarian Cup, a title they have lifted three times. After winning their first league title in 2005, they have gone on repeat the feat in three of the following four campaigns.

Debrecen currently lie fifth in the league with four wins and one defeat. The defending champions find themselves three points behind Videoton, but having played two games less than the leaders. Last weekend saw the team coached by Zoran Szpisjlak beat Paksi FC 1-0 on the road courtsey of a headed goal from Szakály.

Liverpool arrive for Wednesday’s match in good stead having thrashed Premier League newcomers Burnley 4-0 at Anfield. Although Fernando Torres failed to get on the scoresheet in Saturday’s victory, the striker has three goals to his name in four appearances.

The Reds, who were quarter-finalists in the Champions League last season, will be hoping to pick up maximum points from a group that also contains Olympique Lyon and Fiorentina; all side that Liverpool have yet to meet in European competition.

The eight group winners plus the runners-up from will go through to the knockout stages. The Champions League final will be staged at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Saturday May 22, 2010.
