Euro champs face France in high profile World Cup qualifier

The clash between the two European heavyweights is the marquee game of the matchday without a doubt, and a mouth-watering encounter is expected between two of the best

16-10-2012

The clash between the two European heavyweights is the marquee game of the matchday without a doubt, and a mouth-watering encounter is expected between two of the best sides in the world: Spain vs France.

Spain are favourites to register their third victory of the campaign on Tuesday. France on the other hand, are still recovering from their bad run of form in recent years. However, under the tutelage of former World Cup winning captain, Didier Deschamps, Les Bleus are slowly regaining their best form. Didier Deschamps would be looking to show the world what Les Bleus are capable of when the 1998 World Cup winners take on the reigning World and European champions in Madrid.

The fact that both teams are entering this much anticipated match unbeaten, has added extra significance to the game. Both France and Spain would be looking to seal all three points on Tuesday in order to set the tone for the remainder of the campaign.

The defending World champions are coming into the game on the back of a 4-0 thrashing of Belarus, thanks to a well deserved hat-trick from Barcelona’s Pedro. On the other hand, things aren’t looking good for the visitors with Les Bleus losing out to Japan in an international friendly on Friday, thanks to a late goal from Manchester United’s summer signing, Shinji Kagawa.

Coaches from both sides know the importance of this game and La Roja boss, Vicente del Bosque has warned his players of taking France lightly. The 61-year-old knows that Les Bleus can cause his side all kinds of trouble on the pitch and has stated that failure in not an option on Tuesday.

“After the game, one of the two teams will be well on course for qualification. This is like a cup tie that needs to be overcome. There will still be 15 points to play for after this game but the double clash with France is vital.”

However, France coach, Didier Deschamps is upbeat about his side’s chances of getting a positive result against La Roja. While talking to reporters the Frenchman stated that Spain are the best side in the world but Les Bleus will play with a game plan, and players believe that they can register a win in Madrid.

“Against Belarus, Spain displayed the incredible quality they possess. But I believe we can bring something back from Madrid. It is clear that Spain are the best team in the world but we shouldn't go there thinking a win is impossible.”
