Europa League champions sets sights on third place as 12/13 season sign-off at The Bridge

Back to the Bridge with a trophy under our arm, there is a league position still to be secured. Chelsea's stunning victory in Amsterdam marked the 11th final in the 10 years of the Roman Abramovich era - the 12th if you include this season's UEFA Super Cup - and our fifth European final overall. Branislav Ivanovic - there is no more deserving player - clinched the 13th trophy since the club changed hands in 2003 with his first European strike since the one that slayed Napoli.

Stylish Benfica were great adversaries but it was not to be for them; they have now lost their last seven European finals over 50 years.

The Blues demonstrated the mettle and efficiency that has been a hallmark of all four UEFA triumphs stretching back to Athens in 1971. As everyone now knows, the Londoners are the first club ever to be holders simultaneously of the Champions League and Europa League and the only English side to have won all three major UEFA trophies.

The win adds a date for your diary: the UEFA Super Cup in Prague on 30 August, against either Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund.

And what a week for Frank Lampard: new club-record goalscorer, captain of the Europa League winners and signed up for another year at the Bridge. Frank Lampard is the top scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season. He also has the best goals-per-minute ratio of any of the topscorers in the top flight.

The victors - and the trophy - are guaranteed a rousing reception for Sunday's final page of a record-breaking 69-match season. Or at least, we hope it is the last: several scenarios would produce a further play-off between Chelsea and Arsenal to determine third and fourth Champions League places. Chelsea are all-but guaranteed one of the two, whereas Arsenal must still see off the challenge of fifth-placed Tottenham, who host Sunderland.

Premier League rule C14 states: 'If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board.'

Any of these combinations of scores on Sunday will result in identical goals records for Chelsea and Arsenal:

Chelsea draw 0-0, Arsenal win 2-1
Chelsea draw 1-1, Arsenal win 3-2
Chelsea draw 2-2, Arsenal win 4-3
Chelsea draw 3-3, Arsenal win 5-4

Should Arsenal drop points, or Chelsea win, west London would secure third place, meaning no qualifying round in the Champions League.

The Blues are the only London team to take three points from Everton this season but the Toffees are unbeaten in the capital in the Barclays Premier League for 16 months, despite only winning four times on the road all season.

Unusually, both teams know their manager is taking charge for the last time. Rafael Benitez leaves knowing he has achieved his key objective of a top-four finish and continued Chelsea's habit of regularly winning silverware.

David Moyes departs soon for Old Trafford, a stadium at which the Pensioners have a proud and successful record. 'I want to be coming to places like this and winning,' the manager declared, 11 years ago, after a defeat at United's home. To date he has never won there in the league, nor at Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool. Sunday will be his 46th and final attempt with the Toffees.

Chelsea's record against David Moyes in his 11 years as Everton manager

Played 31
Chelsea wins 17
Everton wins 3
Draws 11
Chelsea goals 51
Everton goals 26

The double champions of Europe have five players who have matched or bettered the 12 goals in all competitions scored by the Merseysiders' top marksman, Marouane Fellaini, who has hit 12.

Four players at Stamford Bridge have netted double figures in the league alone. Opta report that the only Premier League sides to manage that previously were Manchester United in 1995/96 and Chelsea, twice, in 2009/10 and 2010/11.

The Londoners are aiming for a first league 'double' over the Mersey blues since 2004/05.
