07-07-2008
France Football places striker in the race for the ‘Ballon d'Or’Fernando Torres finished the season at Liverpool as top goalscorer hitting 33 goals in his debut year in England. The forward broke several Anfield records along the way, also becoming the highest goalscoring foreigner in a debut season in the Premier League (…and all his goals came from open-play).

The striker’s performances at Euro 2008 also earned Fernando rave reviews, but the Spaniard saved the best for last, hitting Spain’s championship winning goal in the 1-0 win over Germany.

The countdown to the ‘Ballon d’Or’ ceremony has already started for France Football who have drawn up a list of ‘top’ players from the recent European Championships. An article published on the magazine’s webiste states the reasons behind Torres’ candidature: “in addition to the decisive goal in the final, Fernando Torres has also collected more points, especially considering his first season in England where he scored 33 goals for Liverpool.”

The Spaniard is joined by: Iker Casillas, Xavi, Senna, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luca Toni, Ribery, Benzema, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Buffon, Arshavin, Sneijder, Michael Ballack, Semi Senturk and Schweinsteiger.
