High-level display by Atletico at The Bridge not enough to avoid CL heartache (1-1)

06-12-2017

It did not happen. The dream of qualifying for Champions League last 16 round finally flew away from Atlético although Madrilenians gave them all at Stamford Bridge to make it true. But it was close. Atlético and Chelsea displayed a high-competed contest and both never gave up in the fight for the win.

Red-and-whites netted the first from a corner kick by Koke. Torres flicked on to the far post and there Saul jumped unmarked to break the deadlock with a header. The first step was then taken as meantime the other Group C decider in Roma was still 0-0. But the stalemate was broken short after by Italians and that were bad news for Atlético short before the score was finally levelled at The Bridge.

A Fabregas’s delivery was cleared to Hazard just outside the box, the Belgian sprinted away from his man and drove the ball across the face of goal, where it was diverted into his own net by Savic.

It was a very special European night at London for Fernando Torres. The striker was Chelsea number nine during three and a half season at Stamford Bridge and returned as Atletico striker in the starting line-up. He could meet four former teammates in Conte’s side: Hazard, Azpilicueta, Moses and Gary Cahill. The most emotional moment took place when shortly after making a Superb goal-assist Fernando Torres was called for substitution. The player walked out from the pitch under an outstanding ovation from the Stamford Bridge faithful, and of course Atletico de Madrid fans too.
