I hope to be with Atletico for a long time

02-03-2005
I hope to be with Atletico for a long timeFernando Torres responded to the questions most frequently asked about Atlético and his personal situation, in an interview with Localia TV. “Atlético has always been my team” he stated, and stressed that he hopes to see out the remaining two years of his contract “and continue for many more.” The young forward left fans in no doubt in that respect, adding that “that which I most value is something more than mere trophies, something which I get from Atlético.” And as far as trophies are concerned, Torres is sure that in the near future the red and whites will have a “great era, and will be able to aspire to Champions League places.” He also gave his backing to the “great work César Ferrando is doing with the squad,” regardless of recent criticism.
Referring to the national team he expressed his disappointment at the early exit from Euro 2004, and stated his desire to “pull that thorn from my side” at the coming World Cup in Germany. “In football, when it comes down to it what makes people call a player great is winning titles with a national side.”
The red and white cntre forward admitted that Kiko had been his idol, both professionally and on a personal level. He also dedicated a few words to his friends, pointing out that he intended to continue living his life the way he always had. “Your lifelong friends are tose who will always be with you, those you have chosen, that’s something that can never change.”
He demonstrated his small regard for the critics, adding that “it’s always best to take criticism constructively, not destructively”, and admitted his role as a ‘media’ footballer but underlined his belief to “never forget that the game comes first.”
Finally he sent a message of hope to his fans: “The league is still there, there are a lot of games left and in the end we’ll be there or thereabouts. We do it for them because they deserve it.”
