Liverpool, who trail fourth-placed Tottenham by four points, will have to improve their away form on Sunday when they face Birmingham, kick-off at 15:00 hours (BST). The Reds, who are without a win on the road in their last six league games, need to collect maximum points from their visit to the Heart of England if they want to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. - Premier League table -

A large part of the Merseysiders’ hopes rest on the shoulders of Fernando Torres who has scored five goals in the last three league matches. The Spaniard has found the back 20 times this season, with 18 coming in the Premier League.

The Liverpool number ‘9’, who has scored 56 Premier League goals in 78 appearances, has failed to score against Birmingham. The Midland club is one of the very few sides who have yet to concede a goal to the ‘Niño’.

Torres missed the corresponding fixture at Anfield earlier in the season due to injury. The Reds and the Blues fought out a tense 2-2 draw on Merseyside. Ngog opened the scoring for the home side but strikes from Christian Benitez and Cameron Jerome put the visitors ahead. The Reds equalised through Gerrard from the spot after Ngog was fouled in the Birmingham box.

Alex McLeish’s side are enjoying their best season in the top-flight since 1951. Birmingham’s ninth place with 45 points is mainly thanks to their solid home record where they unbeaten in their last 12 home games.

The Brummies drew their last outing at St.Andrews against title chasing Arsenal 1-1. Substitute Kevin Phillips scored a stoppage-time equaliser to cancel out Nasri’s 81st minute strike.

Liverpool will be looking for a change in fortunes for the trip to Birmingham as recent meetings favour the home side. The Blues are unbeaten in their last seven league games against Liverpool with five draws and two defeats.

A win for the Merseysiders coupled with results elsewhere, could leave the Reds just one point off the top four, although both Man City and Tottenham have a game in hand.

Following Sunday’s match at St.Andrews, Liverpool attentions turn to the Europa League clash at home to Benfica on Thursday. The Anfield club need to overturn a 2-1 defeat from the first-leg in Lisbon to seal a place in the semifinals.
