Liverpool will be aiming to put their disappointing league defeat away to Pompey behind them when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday, kick-off at 17:30 hours (GMT). For Fernando Torres, the festive fixture could see the Spaniard write a new page in Liverpools history books. The forward has hit 49 league goals for the Reds in 70 appearances and needs just one more goal in his next nine league outings to become the fastest Liverpool player in the history of the club to score 50 league goals. - Premier League Table -

The striker arrives for the match on the back of his recent selection for FIFA/FIFPro World XI. Torres was named in the star line-up at the FIFA 2009 Gala held in Switzerland after more than 50,000 professional footballers had voted for the best player in each position.

A mixed run of results from the Merseysiders has seen the top four teams pull away, and all three points at home to Wolves are a must for Rafa Benitez' side from the Boxing Day clash. The Reds currently lie eighth in the Premier League, eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa (who they play on Dec 29), and a full 14 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Saturdays visitors to Anfield are currently on their best run of the season, with three wins from their last four games. Wolves moved out of the relegation zone last weekend courtesy of a 2-0 win at home to Burnley. Strikes from Nenad Milijas and Kevin lifted the side up to 12th, three points above 18th placed Bolton Wanderers.

The Wanderers have a poor record on the road, having just managed two away wins in the league this campaign. Mick McCarthy's team beat Wigan 1-0 back in August and defeated Spurs at White Hart Lane by a similar scoreline on December 12th.

The last meeting between the two sides at Anfield took place during the 2003/04 season. Finnish defender Sami Hyypia headed home a Steven Gerrard corner in stoppage time as the Reds secured a last-gasp triumph (1-0).

In the corresponding fixture at Molineux, Wolves and Liverpool drew 1-1. Bruno Cheyrou fired the visitors in front but a Kenny Miller strike in the 90th minute sealed a precious point for West Midlanders. Wolves were relegated at the end of the 2003/04 season, and the club founded in 1877 had to wait until the 2008/09 season to regain promotion to the top-flight- winning the Championship in fine fashion.

Following the Reds home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool will play Aston Villa at Villa Park on Dec 29, kick-off at 19:45 hours (GMT). The Merseysiders next face Reading in the FA Cup on January 2nd before returning to Premier League action against Spurs on January 10th.
