Merseysiders to face Romanian champions in Europa League first-leg

On Thursday evening Liverpool will face another side knocked-out of the Champions League when they enter the last 32 of the Europa League. Unirea Urziceni will be the visitors to Anfield in a match that will kick-off at 20:05 hours (GMT). Liverpool entered the Europa League after failing to secure a top-two finish in their Champions League group. Fiorentina finished top, with French outfit Olympique Lyon in second. The Merseysiders only managed to collect seven points, but the seven point haul was more than enough to finish above bottom-placed Debreceni who lost all six of their matches.

The Europa League clash will be the first meeting between the two clubs in European competition. Liverpool have won six, drawn two and lost just one of their nine games against sides from Romania. The one and only defeat came in the first round of the European Champion Clubs’ Cup away to FC Petrolul Ploiesti during the 1966/67 season.

Unirea, who were managed this season by former Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu, will arrive on Merseyside with a new coach. Former Israeli international midfielder Roni Levy will be making his European debut as Unirea manager against the Reds.

Urziceni won the domestic league title for the first time last season, and the Romanians surprised many in the Champions League, finishing third in Group G behind Sevilla and Stuttgart, but ahead of Glasgow Rangers.

Unirea collected eight points from their group with impressive wins at home to Sevilla 1-0, and away to Rangers at Ibrox 4-1.

The Europa League is Liverpool’s last realistic chance of silverware this season, and no doubt the Reds will be aiming to take a healthy lead with them when they travel to Romania for the return leg on February 25.
