Next stop Wolves, as Reds set sights on top four

25-01-2010

Liverpool travel to Molineux on Tuesday to take on Wolves in the midweek Premier League fixture, kick-off at 19:45 hours (GMT). A victory for the Reds is vital in their pursuit of a top four finish. The Reds arrive for the game on the back of a morale boosting 2-0 at home to Tottenham. The win moved Rafa Benitez’ side to within just one point of fourth placed Spurs, and within striking distance of a coveted Champions League berth. - Premier League Table -

Mick McCarthy's side are just one place above relegation. Wolves are level on points with third from bottom Hull City, but Wanderers are above Hull courtesy of a better goal difference. Wolves have struggled of late in the league, and have failed to score in their last three Premiership matches. The Midlanders last run-out at Molineux ended in a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan.

Tuesday’s match will be the 96th meeting between these sides in all competitions. Liverpool have won 46 times to Wolves’ 33, with a further 16 games ending in a draw.

Although Liverpool have a positive record against their rivals, they have not won at Molineux since 1979. A solitary strike from defender Alan Hansen was enough to secure all three points.

The last meeting between the two sides at Molineux took place in 2003/4, and ended in a draw. Bruno Cheyrou scored for the visitors but a late strike from Kenny Miller earned the home side a share of the spoils.

The two teams met back on Boxing Day at Anfield with the Reds collecting all three points with a 2-0 win against ten-man Wolves. The visitors had Ward sent-off early in the second-half, and Liverpool soon made the numerical advantage count. Steven Gerrard headed home an Emiliano Insua cross on 62 minutes before Yossi Benayoun doubled the lead with twenty minutes remaining.
