Wigan registered their first ever victory over Liverpool on Monday night with a 1-0 over Liverpool. The Latics edged the Reds 1-0 courtesy of a first-half strike from Colombian striker Rodallega. Fernando Torres played the full 90 minutes and came closest to scoring for the visitors. It was an unlucky evening for the Spaniard with two efforts just over the bar, a volley inches past the upright and a shot which bounced off the outside of the post.

Relegation threatened Wigan took the game to the Reds, but it was Liverpool who were to create the first chance of the evening. A ball from Maxi found Torres in space, but the number 9s volley from an acute angle struck the foot of the post before going behind for a goal-kick.

Benayoun next found the Spaniard in the box, but the forwards effort flew over the goal defended by former Red Cris Kirkland.

The hosts were hustling Liverpool well and their pressure paid off on 35 minutes when a backpass from Kuyt was intercepted by Boyce whose cross was clipped past Reina by Rodallega.

Torres came close to equalising for the Reds just before the half-time interval. The striker out-jumped his marker in the box but his header from Maxis cross flew just over the bar.

The Merseysiders continued to look uncomfortable after the restart as the home side defended with ten-men behind the ball looking to hit the visitors on the break.

An acrobatic volley from Fernando Torres flew the wrong side of the post as Liverpool came agonisingly close to an equaliser. Maxi and Fernando Torres teamed-up again, but this time the Spaniards right-foot drive failed to hit the target.

The Reds continued to press their opponents in search of at least a point from Premier League contest, but at the other end Kyrgiakos was forced to clear off the line after a mix-up at the back between Carragher and Reina. Morenos looping effort was headed for the back of the net but the Greek defender managed to clear just in time.

Liverpool enjoyed a series of corners as Wigan looked to defend their slender one goal lead. Kuyt had a goalbound header blocked as the Red pressure failed to find an equaliser.
