Liverpool will be looking to defend their 1-0 lead when Real Madrid visit Anfield on Tuesday for the return-leg of the last sixteen of the Champions League, kick-off at 19:45 hours (GMT). In the first-leg at the Santiago Bernabeu a Benayoun goal separated the two teams. The Israeli international headed home with just under 10 minutes remaining as Liverpool came away with a priceless victory. Fernando Torres picked up an ankle injury in the first minute, but managed to play on for just over an hour.

Before being substituted the number ‘nine’ came close to giving the Reds the lead, but Iker Casillas in the home goal produced an excellent save to deny the Spaniard’s right-footed shot from an acute angle.

Real Madrid arrive for the return-leg against Liverpool at Anfield on the back a of 1-1 draw against city rivals Atletico. The Whites went into the Madrid derby on the back of a 10-match winning streak in La Liga, but they were lucky to come away with a draw in the Saturday night match at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Diego Forlan gave Atletico the lead with a strike before half-time before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar levelled 12 minutes into the second half. The away team came close to regaining the lead on several occasions as Real Madrid struggled to cope with Atletico’s firepower.

The Reds, which recently topped Uefa’s ranking as Europe’s best club, have enjoyed more days rest than their Champions League opponents as their last fixture came against Premier League side Sunderland last Tuesday. Fernando Torres watched on from the stands as two second-half goals from French striker Ngog and Benayoun helped the Merseysiders to all three points.

The Liverpool number ‘9’ hopes to return for the Champions League return-leg versus Real Madrid. “The ankle injury has been giving me some trouble and the recovery process is taking longer than I hoped. However, I’m quite optimistic that I will be ready for the match versus Real Madrid, and if the ankle holds out, I will also be at Old Trafford.”

Come Tuesday night, one of Europe’s top three clubs in the European Cup and the Champions League competition will have to watch the remainder of the tournament sat at home, whilst the winner moves into the last eight.
