The draw for the Confederations Cup took place in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon with Spain falling into Group A alongside Iraq, New Zealand and South Africa. Group B sees Italy drawn against Brazil, Egypt and USA.

The opening match of the summer event will see hosts South Africa face Iraq on June 14, followed by the Group A clash between Spain and Oceania champions New Zealand.

The Euro 2008 winners, who are undefeated in all competitions since 2006, will fancy their chances of finishing top of Group A, where they will next face the second-placed team from Group B in the semi-finals.

It will be Spain’s first appearance at the Confederations Cup as the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (CAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, AFC, OFC, CONCACAF), along with the FIFA World Cup winner and the host country, fight it out for a place in the final on June 28, and the eighth edition of the trophy.
