Steven Gerrard takes his hat off to “the best striker in the world”

Steven Gerrard labelled Fernando Torres the best striker in the world after Liverpool’s impressive 4-1 defeat of Manchester United, their biggest win at Old Trafford

Steven Gerrard labelled Fernando Torres the best striker in the world after Liverpool’s impressive 4-1 defeat of Manchester United, their biggest win at Old Trafford since 1936. “He's magic. I know I'm going to be biased but I don't think that anyone will argue against me that he's the best striker in the world. If we keep him fit from now to the end of the season it's going to be an exciting finish.”

Cristiano Ronaldo put the home side in front from the spot, but Torres led the Red revival with an excellent solo goal, before sending Gerrard clear who was then fouled by Patrice Evra in the Man U box; with the Liverpool captain scoring the resulting penalty. Fabio Aurelio curled home a free-kick before Dossena grabbed a fourth in stoppage time.

Injuries this season to the Anfield club skipper and the Spanish striker meant that Saturday’s game was only the ninth time Gerrard and Torres had featured together in the Premier League. “It's frustrating not having him out there and playing alongside him. We have a good understanding. I believe that if we’d had him for more games we'd be closer or even in front of United.”

Liverpool next face Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday March 22 at 16:00 hours (GMT), with leaders Man U travelling down to London to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, March 21. Should results go the Red's way, Torres and hs team-mates could go to bed on Sunday night just one point behind their North-West neighbours.
