Striker has sights set on lifting his third international trophy

28-06-2008
Striker has sights set on lifting his third international trophyThe Liverpool and Spanish striker will be hoping to make it three wins out of three when he takes to the Ernst Happel pitch on Sunday. Fernando has his sights set on defeating Germany to lift the 2008 European Championships, as he aims to add to his Under 16s and Under 19s European Championship titles. The young striker also knows what it feels like to beat Germany in a final, scoring Spain’s only goal in the 1-0 victory over the Germans in the Under 19s tournament held in Norway.

Fernando Torres has a 100% record when it comes to finals with the ‘red’ shirt. The striker lifted the Under 16s European Championship title in 2001 scoring the only goal in the final against France. Fernando also collected the MVP award during the tournament, along with the Golden Boot after finishing-up top goalscorer.

The following season it was the turn of the Under 19s European Championships in Norway. The system employed by the tournament suffered a change from previous editions, with no semifinals; instead, the winners of the two groups, formed by four teams, went directly into the Championship final. Spain qualified for the main event with two wins and a draw, and Germany did the same in their group to set-up a final, Spain v Germany.

Torres was the national hero in the final held in Oslo on July 28. The Spanish forward scored a clever goal following a great pass from team-mate Andres Iniesta, as Spain went onto win the trophy. Hopefully history will repeat itself in Vienna on Sunday.
