Sunday League duty for Atletico away versus Torres´ goal victim FC Barcelona

10-01-2015

Atletico travel to the Camp Nou to take on Barca in confident mood following their midweek last-16 Copa del Rey clash with fierce rivals Real Madrid, which saw Fernando Torres make a winning return to his boyhood club with Atleti running out 2-0 winners at the Vicente Calderon.

A penalty from Atletico's Raul Garcia and Jose Maria Gimenez's header secured victory for Diego Simeone's side as they put one foot in quarter-finals of the competition ahead of next week's second leg in the Bernabeu.

Torres will be determined to show the scoring touch that saw him become Atletico's top scorer for five consecutive seasons and earn a move to Liverpool in 2007. Torres could get another opportunity to shine in Barcelona, though, where he famously scored for Chelsea in the semi-final of Champions League in 2012 as the Blues went on to win their first European crown. El Nino has scored eight goals in 11 appearances against Barca.

Atletico take on a Barcelona outfit who failed to take advantage of Real Madrid's slip up at Valencia last weekend as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to David Moyes' Real Sociedad in the Basque Country on Sunday evening. Leaders Real had slipped up earlier in the day having seen their club record 22-match winning streak brought to a shuddering halt as they went down 2-1 at the Mestalla to Valencia. Had Barcelona taken advantage they would have moved two points clear of Los Blancos at the top of the table but remain a point behind.

The last time the two sides met at the Camp Nou in the final game of last season Atletico secured the draw they needed to win the title and will hold no fear Barca's potent attack here having kept free scoring Real at bay during the week. The game will kick-off at 20:00 GMT.
