Liverpool had to settle for a point at home to Manchester City in the midday Saturday Premier League fixture. The visitors, who rarely threatened the Merseysiders, made the most of their chances on a frustrating afternoon for Rafa Benitez’s side.

The Reds were without their top scorer for the visit of Mark Hughes’ City. The Spain forward, currently recovering from a nagging groin injury, is working around the clock as he looks to return to full fitness.

The homes side were very much on top during the opening 45 minutes. Gerrard volleyed narrowly over and Kuyt had a goalbound shot deflected behind for a corner. At the other end, City failed to trouble Reina who was a virtual spectator until the half-time interval.

All four goals arrived in the second-half. Martin Skrtel got on the end of a Gerrard free-kick to give the home the lead on 50 minutes. It was the defender’s first goal for the Merseysiders.

With just over twenty minutes remaining, Emmanuel Adebayor equalised for City. The summer signing from Arsenal headed a Craig Bellamy corner past Reina in the Liverpool goal.

Manchester City then took a surprise lead seven minutes later when Wright-Phillips turned Kyrgiakos before setting-up Ireland. The midfielder was left with the easy task of passing the ball into the back of the net.

The lead however didn’t last long as the Reds were level barely a minute later. Yossi Benayoun turned in Ngog’s inviting right-wing cross to make it 2-2.

The home side continued to push forward in search of a winner and Lucas Leiva came close to grabbing all three points for Liverpool deep into stoppage time. The midfielder’s header from a Gerrard cross flew just wide of the upright.
