Three points a must as Spain look to bounce back versus Chile

Defending champions Spain will face the ‘suicidal’ attacking style of Chile at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday aiming to get their World Cup bid back on track and avoid an early exit.

Spain were defeated 5-1 by the Netherlands in their Group B opener on Friday - their worst World Cup loss since a 6-1 mauling by Brazil in 1950.

With Chile recording a 3-1 victory over Australia in their opening match thanks to a suicidal attacking style, according to midfielder Arturo Vidal, the South Americans will reach the next round if they beat Spain and the Dutch sink the Socceroos in Wednesday's first clash.

Spain began with a defeat before lifting the Trophy four years ago, yet there was a world of difference between their 1-0 loss to Switzerland four years ago and Friday's 5-1 rout by the Netherlands. Vicente del Bosque is not the type of coach to tear up plans and start again, so he will most likely make a few minor adjustments and hope for a burst of pride from his players.

In the other game in Group B, the Netherlands will have to guard against overconfidence as they take on a tenacious Australia side, opponents they have never beaten in the past.
