Top-seeded Liverpool await Champions League draw

26-08-2009

On Thursday evening at 18:00 hours (CET) the Reds will learn who their group rivals are for the 2009/10 Champions League trophy in a draw that will be held in Monaco. A total of 32 clubs will take part in Europe’s top club competition made up from 22 teams who qualified automatically from their domestic league competitions, and with a further 10 sides who have come through the various qualifying rounds.

The 32 clubs will be divided into four different pots with Liverpool placed in the first pot alongside defending champions Barcelona, fellow Spanish club Seville; AC Milan, Bayern Munich and three other English teams, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Should Arsenal fail to qualify (the Gunners currently lead Celtic 2-0 after the first-leg), they will be replaced by French outfit Olympique Lyon. A total of eight groups will be drawn with the two top teams progressing into the next round.

Fernando Torres could be drawn against his boyhood club Atletico Madrid who on Tuesday night secured a 5-2 aggregate play-off win against Panathinaikos. The match could be a welcome return to the Vicente Calderon Stadium for the forward who unfortunately missed last season's tie in Madrid with injury. Torres did manage to face his previous club during the pre-season at Anfield, but in recent forward's own words, he would like to line-up against Atletico at the Vicente Calderon.

Another possible rival for the Reds is Real Madrid. The Spanish club are not one of the stop seeds and will be in pool number 2. Torres face the Whites last season in the Spanish capital as Liverpool won 1-0 courtesy of a Benayoun goal. In the return-leg the Liverpool number '9' opened the scoring as the Merseysiders cruised to a 4-0 victory.

Liverpool’s sights will be set on the final which will be held on May 22, 2010 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. For the first time in the tournament’s history the match will take place on a Saturday, having been moved from the traditional Wednesday.
