Torres fever sweeps Madrid as number ‘19’ shirt sales break Atletico club record

06-01-2015

Fernando Torres has made a big impact on Atletico Madrid fans since his return to boyhood club. Over 2.000 Atleti fans snapped up a replica shirt with Torres’ name on the back on Sunday alone, a club record, after 45,000 turned out to welcome him back to the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The former Liverpool man has chosen number 19 to have on his back, with Mario Mandzukic currently occupying the number 9 he made famous during his first spell at the club and also took on his Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan kits. The number is a tribute to Torres’ hero Kiko, the Spain striker who spent the majority of his playing days with Atletico.

Some years before, when he was a Liverpool player in 2009/10 season, the Red number ‘9’ shirt became the most popular to feature on the back of a replica Premier League shirt. Sporting ID confirmed that ‘Torres’ was the name most printed on Premier League tops sold across the world.

It was the Spaniard’s second successive season at the summit after finishing top of the charts at the end of the 2008/09 Season. That campaign saw Torres push Ronaldo into second-place; and one season after it was Liverpool teammate Steve Gerrard who finished second, with Manchester United striker Wayned Rooney in third.
