"Torres is the best forward in Spain"

22-02-2005
El Madrigal was witness to a new goalscoring explosion from the Kid.
Fernando Torres once againn demonstrated on Sunday that he’s fnishing problems have been put to bed.
The Kid had three shots on goal against Villarreal, and another couple of one-on-ones with Reina, and the result was the same every time: goal! Unfortunately only two of tem got onto the scoreboard thanks to refereeing errors, and non-existent offsides.

For José Eulogio Gárate, one of Atletico’s mythical former players, Torres’ recent dry spell isn’t down to anything more than ‘one of the rough patches every goalscorer goes through.’ He added that his supposed problems of technique in resolving one-on-one situations has been proved false by recent evidence.

Gárate has known Torres since the beginning and has seen his level of skill develop to the point that he states that “his development in the last couple of years has allowed him to become Spain’s number one striker.’ Like the forward that Gárate was, he knows that Torres ‘lives by goals and for goals, and when you don’t score you get demoralized’ and for this reason he feels that ‘Torres has shown his strength of character, rising above the criticism which was heard during the period when he couldn’t find the net.’
Fernando Torres has got through his drought and proved that in the area where he was most criticized, his finishing, he has no problems. Game after game the red and white forward has been unveiling a repertoire which surely owe a great deal to the videos the Kid has at home of his great idol: Marco Van Basten.

But Torres get little other help. And, according to Garate Poco the system Atletico play doesn’t favour his style of play. They don’t play it around much so he gets few decent balls. This affects his ability to act effectively and sometimes means he snatches at chances.’ The red and white legend remembers he too having bad periods in front of goal and how ‘getting out of them was tricky because hard as you tried the ball just wouldn’t go in the net. The most important thing is the psychological factor, and in that aspect Torres will always come through.’
