After leading the attacking line in the 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, Fernando Torres said that Atletico Madrid have reached an elite level. The Rojiblancos have ruled out holders Barcelona and now the German champions is one goal down after first leg.

Saul Niguez’s stunning 11th minute effort was the only goal on the night, and Torres said that the 21-year-old midfielder played a huge role in the match. “Saul is spectacular, he had a great first half and scored a great goal.

“It let us play the game the way that we wanted to play.” Torres came close to adding to the hosts’ advantage in the 75th minute, but his shot from the right side of the box glanced off of the far post.

“The post was a shame, we could have had an even greater advantage,” he said.

The 32-year-old concluded his post-match interview with beIN Sports by dedicating the win to the team’s supporters.

“It was a fantastic night for all Atleticos”, he said. “We’ve got the lead we wanted.”
