Fernando Torres hit his fifth goal in seven days to hand Liverpool the lead away to Man U. The Spaniard’s opener was an excellent goal. The striker rose high in the Man U box before powering a header beyond Van der Sar’s desperate dive. The Reds though were going to go home empty-handed as Rooney levelled after his penalty was parried by Reina, and Park headed past Reina on 60 minutes to secure all three points. - Premier League Table -

Rafa Benitez made one change to the side that beat Lille 3-0 midweek with Maxi Rodriguez, who was ineligible for the Europa League tie against the French, coming in for Ryan Babel.

With just five minutes gone Old Trafford was stunned into silence by Fernando Torres. The striker celebrated his 26th birthday with a thumping header past Edwin van der Saar after Dirk Kuyt’s cross had picked out the unmarked forward in the box.

Unfortunately for the Reds, the lead was to last only seven minutes as the referee awarded Man U a penalty. Mascherano had brought down Valencia on the edge of the area, and although the foul was committed outside the box, the referee pointed to the spot. Pepe Reina guessed right to deny Rooney, but the England international stroked home the rebound.

Straight from the kick-off Steve Gerrard and Fernando Torres linked-up well on the edge of the box, but Edwin Van der Sar raced off his line just in time to dive at the striker’s feet.

After a see-saw start, the Red Devils slowly gained control of the ball. Gerrard started playing deeper to try and help out the Red midfield, but the captain’s new position in the middle left Torres isolated up front.

The hosts were now on top as Park headed a Valencia cross wide and Nani had a curling effort tipped around the post by Reina. Liverpool failed to test Reina’s opposing number as the teams went in level at the break.

Man Utd grabbed the lead 15 minutes after the interval. Fletcher’s cross from over on the right was met by Park who headed past Reina from the edge of the six-yard box.

After taking the lead United sat back looking to defend their one goal advantage. Rafa Benitez brought on Benayoun, Aquilani and Babel as Liverpool tried to probe for an equaliser.

Chances were we few are far between, but with the game almost up, the Reds had a half-chance to score. Unluckily for Liverpool and the Spain striker, the ball bobbled-up just as Torres was about to strike. His shot looped up into the air, before being headed goalwards by Benayoun. The midfielder’s effort however was easily caught by the keeper. That was to be the last chance of the contest as Liverpool slipped to a 2-1 defeat.
