Anfield enjoyed another goal fest as the Liverpool number ‘9’ struck twice in the Red’s 3-0 win against Sunderland on Sunday. A cracking right-foot shot from the edge of the area into the far corner and coolly taken second sent the home side to an important three points and took Torres’ goal-tally in the Premier League to an impressive 18 goals in 21 appearances.

The home side got off to a flying start as the ‘Niño’ opened the scoring with an excellent goal on 3 minutes. Torres collected the ball out on the wing before attacking the area and letting fly from an acute angle. The ball flew past Gordon who was left with no chance in the Sunderland goal.

The goal settled any possible early nerves as the Merseysiders went onto dominate the Sunday contest. Gerrard and Torres had Sunderland against the ropes but it defender Johnson who was to double Liverpool’s lead just after the half hour mark.

The full-back latched onto a loose ball just outside the Sunderland area. His goalbound shot took a slight defection off Turner before nestling in the back of the net.

Sunderland were lucky to go in at the break just two goals down as Torres cracked a shot against the post with Gordon beaten.

There was little change after the break as Reina continued to look on as a spectator as his teammates peppered the Sunderland goal. The third arrived on 59 minutes. Fernando Torres was played in by Johnson and the Spaniard sent two defenders and goalkeeper to ground before calmly slotting home.

With Liverpool’s Europa League first-leg clash around the corner, Rafa Benitez rested Kuyt, Fernando Torres and Gerrard for the final stages with Aquilani, Ngog and El Zhar coming on.

Zenden shot just past the post in Sunderland’s best chance of the second-half as Liverpool defended their three goal lead without breaking sweat.
