Atletico Madrid and Benfica will seek to keep on running on their Group C path when they meet at the Vicente Calderon in the Champions League on Wednesday (20:45 GMT). While Atletico returned from its trip to Istanbul on matchday one with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray, Benfica saw off newcomers Astana by the same result. A win for either side would send it three points clear at the top, with Diego Simeone’s Atleti hoping its impressive home form can get it back to winning ways.

Fernando Torres has scored three goals to the Portuguese side both with Liverpool and Chelsea. The Spaniard and Atlético number ‘9’ made two goals at Anfield on Europa League 09/10 season quarter-final game. But the most important striker over the ‘eagles’ was the first goal on Amsterdam 2013 Europa League final. Torres scored the opener after a genuine Torres’ performance. The game finished 2-1 and secured the title for Blues.

Simeone’s men were frustrated on the weekend with a narrow defeat to Villarreal with the Argentine coach continuing to search for his best attacking line-up. This match is the first of two crucial clashes, with the second at the Vicente Calderon as well, on Sunday night, against Real Madrid. No visitors in the Champions League have scored in the Calderon sincce Kaka in Atletico’s 4-1 victory in March 2014, the season they got to the final of the competition.

Benfica has had a mixed start to Rui Vitoria’s time in charge, winning five of eight matches but losing to Porto in the Primeira Liga and Sporting Lisbon in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. Saturday’s 3-0 win over Paços de Ferreira will have boosted confidence.
