Fernando Torres has achieved an awesome trophy cabinet from Spain National team and Chelsea FC huge successes, but his mayor dream in career is still to be done: just to win a trophy with Atletico Madrid. Torres, who is yet to win a major competition with Atletico, was first introduced to the world when captained the senior side at age 19, after making his debut for the club as a 17-year-old in 2001.

However, in 2007, Liverpool secured the services of the Spanish international, spending four years with the Reds getting a runner-up spot in 2007/08 Premier League season before making a move in 2011 to Chelsea, where he won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup. The he returned to boyhood club Atletico in 2015 after a short spell in Milan.

Now that he is back at the club Torres has a dream of lifting a major competition trophy. And the La Liga title would no doubt be the one he targets most because he is yet to win a league title in his career.

“Winning the league title here would be a dream come true,” said Torres. “As a kid, I grew up wanting to win La Liga.”

Speaking to a group of South African journalists at Atletico Madrid’s training ground, Torres says he spent the best seasons of his playing career at Liverpool, where he had a telepathic relationship with the legendary Steven Gerrard, scoring 81 goals in 142 appearances.

“It’s different. Liverpool gave me their heart and they loved me. I spent probably the best seasons of my life playing for Liverpool. Chelsea gave me what I was looking for when I left Atletico, which is to win trophies. So I hope the best for both of them.”

Also Fernando Torres says that winning the Fifa World Cup back in 2010 in South Africa was beyond his wildest dreams.

“The World Cup, I never thought about it. I used to think it was for the likes of Brazil and Argentina, not for Spain,” he said.

“I could not see us winning it because it was never done. Now I am sure the kids behind us must think they can win it because we did.”

But he admits it was a tough ask for La Furia Roja winning football’s ultimate prize.

“It was very hard to play in the highveld. It was very cold, and we lost our opening match against Switzerland. And then we won the other matches by small margins. It was a hard World Cup to win.”
