The race is on as fans bid for a chance to lay their hands on a signed pair of Fernando Torres football foots. The Liverpool number ‘9’s boots currently lead the way in a charity auction on behalf of the Spanish delegation of Joint Force Command Brunssum’s International Charity Committee.

With just under a day to go, the striker’s boots have received the most number of bids, and Torres’ footwear also lies second in the list of articles being auctioned- only behind Spanish bullfighter Jose Tomas’ cape which has totaled 30 bids with the current highest bidder offering 520 euros.

At the last count (Wednesday 20, 19:00 hours GMT) a total of 52 bids had been made, the latest bid being 325 euros. Spanish Singer Julio Iglesias follows with 45 bids, with the current highest bidder offering 250 euros.

Other popular items in the benefit auction are a signed ball from the Atletico Madrid squad (19 bids, 153.50 euros), a Messi signed shirt (25 bids, 137.50 euros), a signed Real Madrid shirt (20 bids, 177.50 euros). Pau Gasol’s boots (19 bids, 102.50 euros) or Fernando Alonso’s gloves (21 bids, 155.50 euros).

All the money raised from the world-wide auction will go to the Spanish delegation of Joint Force Command Brunssum’s International Charity Committee. This year the delegation has worked towards creating food banks and centres, centres for children, and water wells in countries like Afghanistan and Burkina Fasso, just to name a few.
